An integrated fish-plankton aquaculture system in brackish water ArchiMer
Gilles, S.; Fargier, L.; Lazzaro, X.; Baras, E.; De Wilde, Nicolas; Drakides, C.; Amiel, C.; Rispal, B.; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture takes advantage of the mutualism between some detritivorous fish and phytoplankton. The fish recycle nutrients by consuming live (and dead) algae and provide the inorganic carbon to fuel the growth of live algae. In the meanwhile, algae purify the water and generate the oxygen required by fishes. Such mechanism stabilizes the functioning of an artificially recycling ecosystem, as exemplified by combining the euryhaline tilapia Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii and the unicellular alga Chlorella sp. Feed addition in this ecosystem results in faster fish growth but also in an increase in phytoplankton biomass, which must be limited. In the prototype described here, the algal population control is exerted by herbivorous...

Changes of the Total Lipid and Omega-3 Fatty Acid Contents in two Microalgae Dunaliella Salina and Chlorella Vulgaris Under Salt Stress BABT
Rismani,Sharare; Shariati,Mansour.
ABSTRACT Effect of salt stress on biomass, cell number, contents of total lipid, omega-3 fatty acids, including ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and their biosynthetic pathway intermediates (palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid) of two microalgae Dunaliella salina and Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. Dilution stress from 1.5 to 0.5 M NaCl and salt stress from 1.5 to 3 M NaCl were incorporated into the D. salina medium. Salt stress of 200 mM NaCl was also applied to C. vulgaris culture. Results indicated that increasing salt concentration resulted in the reduced growth rate of C. vulgaris and substantial increase of the total lipid content in both species. Proper growth rate of...

Influence of temperature and nutrient content on lipid production in freshwater microalgae cultures Anais da ABC (AABC)
BOHNENBERGER,JULIANA E.; CROSSETTI,LUCIANE O..
The production of biomass by microalgae is considered a clean alternative compared to other plant crops that require large areas for cultivation and that generate environmental impacts. This study evaluated the influence of temperature and nutrients on lipid contents of cultured species of freshwater microalgae, with a view toward using these lipids for biodiesel production. Two strains of Monoraphidium contortum, a culture containing Chlorella vulgaris and Desmodesmus quadricauda and another strain of Microcystis aeruginosa were maintained in the laboratory for six days, in five culture media: modified ASM-1 (control, with high concentrations of phosphate and nitrate; phosphorus-deficient; non-limiting phosphate; nitrogen-deficient; and non-limiting...

Inhibition of the water splitting system by sodium chloride stress in the green alga Chlorella vulgari Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
EL-Sheekh,Mostafa M..
The effect of sodium chloride on the photosynthetic electron transport chain was investigated in the freshwater green alga Chlorella vulgaris. It was found that the rate of oxygen evolution under steady state and flash light conditions diminished by increasing salt concentrations. Salt treatment of cells also decreased the fluorescence and delayed luminescence yields. However, the fluorescence yield was almost completely restored by the addition of an artificial electron donor to the NaCl-treated cells. The oscillation pattern of the thermoluminescence B band as a function of flash number indicated that the S2<FONT FACE=Symbol>®</FONT>S3 transition of the water splitting system is inhibited by NaCl treatment.

Large-scale microalgae production for nursery rearing of marine bivalves OMA
De Pauw, N.; Verboven, J.; Claus, C..
The feasibility of large-scale bloom induction of nutritionally suited natural phytoplankton species, to feed a semi-industrial nursery of edible shellfish, built on the Belgian coast, was tested. The outdoor microalgal production unit consisted of four tanks of 100 m² surface each (two of 1 m depth and two of 0.5 m depth), equipped with different mixing devices. The cultures were run as chemostats in which seawater was enriched with commercial inorganic N, P and Si fertilizers. Depending on the season, between 5-10 and 80% of the culture volume could be harvested daily, with algal densities ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 cells per ml. By manipulation of operational parameters such as detention time, nutrient levels and nutrient ratios (N: Si: P), unsuited...

The effect of HUFA and vitamin C-enriched rotifers on larval growth and survival of grouper (<i>Epinephelus suillus</i>) OMA
Chavez, D.R.; Estenor, D.G.; Merchie, G.; Lavens, P..
Newly-hatched grouper larvae were reared for 24 days at a density of 15 larvae.l-1 in 250-l capacity cylindro-conical tanks filled with 200l seawater. Starting day 2, the larvae were given: <i>Chlorella</i>-fed rotifers (Chl-R) rotifers fed Culture Selco (INVE Aquaculture NV, Belgium) (CS-R), and rotifers fed Culture Selco and consequently enriched for 24h with 20% vitamin C (CSC-R). The rotifer density in the larval tanks was maintained at 15 rotifers.ml-1. The rotifer diet was supplemented with egg yolk until day 5. Each treatment had five replicates. Preliminary results show no significant difference in the survival rate of grouper larvae given Chl-R (4.21±2.8%), CS-R (2.56±0.9%) and CSC-R...
